We have a unique and promising tourist destination

Dear Editor, A couple of years ago, a significant amount of people had never heard about Guyana and what it has to offer. However, due to the country implementing the Low Carbon Development Strategy, Guyana is being talked about quite a lot on the international stage. It is no secret that our tourism industry has seen progress in many areas, and the future seems very bright for that industry. However, there is quite a lot more work to be done in order for us to be competitive on a global…

West Indies need a strong and balanced batting line-up

Dear Editor, It is obvious that the West Indies cricket team has found a varying and effective bowling attack. There are Kemar Roache with his thunderbolt pace; Ravi Rampaul who is the most daring and aggressive bowler in the squad; Darren Sammy who is good at changing the pace of every ball he bowls; Devendra Bishoo who knows when to flight his deliveries and when to turn them; and finally Anthony Martin, who can consistently bowl a decent line and length. There are also other bowlers, like Dwayne Bravo and…

My positive experiences at several government entities in Guyana

Dear Editor, Too many letter writers are obsessed with the syndrome of negativity. I read from unfair complainers that offices at GPO, NIS, VAT, etc are all non- professional in dispensing their duties. I am sure that this is not the norm. Recently, I had cause to visit three offices, and at each venue my experience was extremely good. I start with the most recent and maybe the most pleasant: a visit to GECOM office in Coldingen, East Coast Demerara. Staff members (at least the complement I saw) were all…

STIs integration into HIV services critical – Guyana Strategic Plan

The integration of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) into HIV services is critical to the prevention and spread of STIs in Guyana. This is according to the Guyana STI Strategic Plan 2011- 2020. The similarities of the two can be seen through the means of transmission; (behavioural patterns) and, more importantly, the methods of prevention are the same. Unfortunately, more emphasis is placed on HIV information and treatment, resulting in almost total neglect of STIs. The Guyana Sexually Transmitted Infections Strategic Plan 2011- 2020 has emphasised the importance of having a…

Bridging the gap – transforming Guyana

The government’s programme for housing development and home ownership has catered for every Guyanese across all racial and political divides, and has been an important achievement for the country to be proud of. LCDS can boost Guyana’s growth prospects – IMF

Directors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have endorsed Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy, saying that its successful implementation with international support will improve Guyana’s long-term growth prospects and reduce poverty.
