Another plus for Berbice

Dear Editor, As a Berbician, I view the news of the new Gy$113 million psychiatric hospital for Canje with a great degree of excitement. Only recently, plans have been put in shape for the first ever school of nursing in the county. With the completion of the new psychiatric hospital, Berbice will now be medically equipped to adequately serve the people of the area. The odds are stacked against them

Dear Editor, Although WI cricket is in decline, it always seems to me that players are not playing only against the eleven players in the opposite team, but that they also have to contend with the two umpires, who seem to be in the opposition team also. At crucial stages during the second Test vs India in Barbados, two decisions were made that were in favour of the opposition. One was when Rahul Dravid was caught by Adrian Barath: the umpire was just a few feet away but yet he…

Time to review the criteria for deciding on the captaincy

Dear Editor, I have been asking myself over and over if the criteria for becoming a cricket captain have changed. I know that, for a cricketer to captain his team, he has to cement his position in the team; and this means he must be a leading bowler or batsman, or a permanent wicket- keeper. Also, he has to demonstrate that he can make effective on- field decisions, and he has to be able to command respect from his teammates, those involved in team selection, and even the administrators of…

The rice industry seems promising

Dear Editor, Earlier this year, we learnt that the Ministry of Agriculture is looking at producing 400,000 tonnes of rice for 2011, and many people questioned this target, as we were hit by floods that caused some farmers to lose quite a substantial amount of rice. However, 200,000 tonnes of rice have already been harvested for the first rice crop for this year, which means that achieving that target for the year is possible, and could even be surpassed, since there is another crop before the end of the year.…

Guyana’s film industry has potential

Dear Editor, Permit me space in your newspaper to comment on Guyana’s much- anticipated film industry. Drama is something I am very passionate about, and it is something Guyanese are excellent at. Guyana has seen an abundance of talent of all sorts over the years. For example, we have witnessed the brilliance of the likes of Ron Robinson, Andre Subryan, Rudy Pattedeo, Henry Rodney, and so on. But our actors have been limited to just on-stage performances. It certainly is time that we give serious consideration to reviving the film…

Global poverty should fall 15 per cent by 2015 – UN report

Global poverty could be reduced by 15 per cent by 2015, the United Nations said in its latest Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) report released on July 7. The report said significant strides towards achieving the MDGs have been made, yet reaching all the goals by the 2015 deadline remains challenging, because the world’s poorest are being left behind. The report, launched by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, says there is reason to celebrate, as major successes have been made since world leaders in 2000 established the goals to reduce extreme…
