Demerara Bank records billion-dollar profit

Demerara Bank Limited has recorded a gross profit of G$1.2 billion during this year, reflecting a 20 per cent increase in profits over last year. The bank is reported to have recorded growth in all the areas of profit: deposit growth, reduction of non-performing assets, and increase in shareholders’ funds. ERC urges respect for Chinese nationals

The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) is urging all state and private sector agencies to develop a policy of non-discrimination against Chinese and all other nationals living in Guyana. This call comes weeks after President Bharrat Jagdeo met with Chinese nationals, earlier this month, and put systems in place to ensure that policies and administrative acts are non-discriminatory against Chinese.  That meeting was held on December 3 at the International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.  The ERC, in a statement, said it publicly supports this commitment made by the government.…

PPP censures Nagamootoo over GuySuCo comments

Attorney-at-law and People’s Progressive Party (PPP) executive member Moses Nagamootoo has been censured by the central committee of that party for comments he made in response to a threat by the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) to derecognise the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU). New York governor pardons more Caribbean nationals

New York Governor David Paterson has granted pardons to 24 immigrants, including Caribbean nationals who were due to be deported because of prior criminal convictions. Though he did not identify the nationalities of all the immigrants who had faced deportation, Paterson singled out Haitian Edouard Colas.
