11 Guyanese cadets promoted to ensigns

GDF officers prepare for the parade march in front of the chief of staff and an array of family members

The Guyana Defence Force on Tuesday promoted 11 newly-commissioned cadet officers to ensigns at a parade held at Camp Ayanganna, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.
Army Chief of Staff, Commodore Gary Best addressed the young officers, telling them that they were on the path of becoming leaders in their own right. Best stated that the GDF would recognise and celebrate the officers’ good work.
He called them valuable resources to not only the GDF but to Guyana as a whole. “It is not just about wearing stars on your shoulder, but to recognise that your shoulders will bear greater burdens and challenges,” he told the ensigns.  “You’ve reached this far and it is most commendable”.
He continued that graduation from this course meant the GDF was preparing officers to contribute to society’s ever-changing needs. “You are expected to lead and be fearless… put your country first,” Best said. He stated that as officers continued on with their careers in the GDF, they would come to see that the stringent discipline that is expected of them will become second nature.

He noted that the GDF is training respectful members of the force who are upholders of “rights to education, training, fair trial, fair investigations” and laws.
Best said they will soon “discover that the Guyana Defence Force has zero tolerance for sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, domestic violence and has a non-discriminatory recruitment and career development policy.”
The army head urged the officers to take on these responsibilities, because it “falls upon [their] shoulders to uphold these rights and provide equal opportunity to subordinates.”
