President Bharrat Jagdeo has urged supporters of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) to ensure that the country continues on its road to success and development by making the right choice during this year’s general elections.
He made this comment on Sunday amidst celebrations at the annual State House Affair, which commemorates the lives of the late Presidents Cheddi and Janet Jagan.
Jagdeo reminded hundreds of guests that, as they gather to remember the lives of their two heroes, they must also keep in mind the importance of their right to vote — a right that the Jagans fought hard for during their days of activism for Guyana’s freedom.
“Most of us didn’t have the right to vote until 1953, and this was largely because of the struggles of these two people. Many of us take it for granted, but we must take this right very seriously; we must guard our right to vote, because at any time it could be taken away from us,” Jagdeo urged.
He stated that, as the General Elections draw nearer, people must remember the need to keep progress constant in the country. He expressed his hope to see the PPP/C remain in office, adding that the party is indeed focused on a better life for Guyanese. He suggested that in people’s decision-making during elections, it is also important to pay attention to the leaders of the opposition. He contended that the leader of the main opposition party belonged to an era when there was no freedom.
“If you are running for the highest office of this country, then we must put your credentials to scrutiny,” Jagdeo said. That aside, he stated, he is still confident that with enough support the PPP/C will rise to the challenge and emerge victorious at the polls. “This is a critical year, but at the same time it is an exciting year. It is time to renew our democracy, because we want to continue with the progress that we have made so far,” the president said. His chants were met with roars of support.
He explained that the principles of Cheddi Jagan are “evergreen”, the moves that Cheddi and Janet Jagan made to fight for freedom in Guyana must be remembered, and the rights that they fought hard to achieve must not be taken for granted.
