The Alliance For Change launched a massive attack on the value and worth of the recently formed and announced “A Partnership For National Unity” (APNU) coalition, stating that it will not make a difference in the political climate here, nor will it manage to attract more electoral support at the upcoming general and regional elections.
Speaking during an interview with Guyana Times International, Alliance For Change presidential candidate Khemraj Ramjattan stated that the coalition is “weak and a disguise to fool Guyanese into believing that the PNCR has changed and will be able, along with these small parties, to make any difference if given the opportunity to lead again.”
“We see this coalition as a signal that the PNCR is demonstrating its low self-confidence and lack of purpose”, Ramjattan said.
He said that the AFC “will never” join the coalition, and wants absolutely nothing to do with the PNCR or the APNU coalition.
“We will not be part of JOPP or APNU, as neither has any benefit for us. The PNCR, by its actions, has proven that we can win”, Ramjattan said.
He chastised the party and its leadership, arguing that it was responsible for the downward spiralling of the economy, a lack of media freedom and several other negative phenomena when it was in power. “They should never be given the chance to wreak havoc again, and their members are displeased with this APNU business.”
The AFC presidential candidate said that the coalition as announced by the JOPP is a “facade and a poor attempt to turn vinegar into honey”. Ramjattan gave notice to APNU that the AFC will do major damage to it at the upcoming elections, as it is mobilizing its members to come out in their numbers to vote for the “key”. Ramjattan further criticised the coalition, stating that it did not really want “national unity and a government that was multi-ethnic”.
The AFC has maintained its right- wing position that it will be no part of any opposition coalition that includes the PNCR.
The opposition coalition APNU was launched on June 24 at the Pegasus Hotel.
It includes the main opposition PNCR, the Working People’s Alliance, the Guyana Action Party, and the Guyana People’s Partnership.
