“The experience would help us to grow”

– Under-20 Lady Jags skipper Ashley Savona on the CONCACAF Championship in Cuba

Guyana’s Lady Jags Under-20 captain, Ashley Savona, has described the experience of being the recently concluded second half CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s championship, as one that would help her team to grow.

Savona made the comment during an exclusive interview with this publication, after the team suffered two defeats as against one win during the games in Cuba. “I do believe those defeats affected our team but in both a positive and negative way. As an Under- 20 team it was disappointing knowing that we would not be going through, but on the upside, it allowed us to grow as a team, and as future players of the Women’s national team, it will be the reason for making sure we do not lose critical games again,” Savona said. The Junior Lady Jags lost to hosts, Cuba 1-5 on January 2, and 1-2 to Trinidad and Tobago five days later, before rebounding to take a 1- 0 win over Puerto Rico on January 11.

Interestingly enough, it was Savona who scored for Guyana in all three games. When Asked about the defeats, Savona said, “We were disappointed in the outcome of these games, but we knew we worked extremely hard and we are very proud of the effort and pride we showed on and off the field,” she explained.

“Puerto Rico was the last game we had to play and we knew that we had lost the chance of making it through to the next round so we had nothing to lose going into the game. This would be our last game as the first Under-20 Guyana women’s national team and we were going to make sure Puerto Rico would not go down without a fight.”
