“I feel relieved now” – Chetram Singh

What has been described as his worst two years of stewardship as head of the Guyana Cricket Board came to an end recently, and former GCB president Chetram Singh says he is relieved to be out of office.

“I feel relieved to be going, especially [with] what transpired in the last two years,” Singh told reporters in his farewell speech.

Over the last two years, the board was plagued with financial turmoil and divisions within its executive ranks.

Singh, who served as head of Guyana’s cricket administration for 20 years, said the decline of the board set in mainly when he got ill.

According to Singh, one group caused most of the problems, and on his return the situation got out of hand. “I could not have stamped my authority and restrain what was going on,” Singh noted.

Singh pointed out that many times he feared going to meetings because of the tense atmosphere among some of the members, and this aspect, he said, he “would love to forget”. The long-serving director of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has truly made significant contributions to the development of cricket since joining the GCB in 1983.

Singh expressed confidence in the new executive, and hoped that they bring new thoughts to the development of cricket.

Singh said that with his removal from being at the helm of the GCB, he would have more time for his family and the opportunity to have long walks in the park.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sterling Products Limited and former marketing manager of the GCB, Ramsey Ali, is Singh’s successor.
