Marty Markowitz - Brooklyn Borough President

The Guyanese community in Brooklyn has touched the heart of Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. In a recent interview with Guyana Times International, Markowitz boasted that Guyanese are very active in the civic and community affairs of Brooklyn.

“Their culture, tradition, value of education, family and faith… they are very hard workers, and they love owning homes. They hate renting, this is not in their DNA, and they take good care of their communities and their homes,” the Brooklyn Borough president said.

The Guyanese community in Brooklyn, New York is integrally involved in social services. One example Markowitz pointed out was that of ensuring the delivery of quality education in the public schools system. “The Guyanese are tremendous, and I also like some of their foods,” he said, adding that the diaspora is a true representation of the country.

He insists that Brooklyn has “the largest Guyanese community, Queens may argue that they have the largest.”

But according to the 2009 U.S. Census Bureau, there are 40,233 Guyanese living in Brooklyn; while 74,000 live in Queens.
