‘Pretty face’ further remanded for businessman’s murder

Edward “Pretty Face” Skeete of 309 Independence Boulevard, Georgetown, charged for the death of Industry businessman Bedi Ramjewan, made another appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, East Coast Demerara on Friday, May 27. He was further remanded by Magistrate Judy Latchman until June 17.

Skeete was accused of murdering Ramjewan on April 28, 2011 at Crown Dam, Industry, ECD, after relieving the businessman of Gy$2 million. His accomplice is still on the run.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Bernard Brown made application for an adjournment, which was granted by the magistrate.

Ramjewan, 38, was reportedly on his way home after conducting business in Georgetown when he was confronted by two armed men on a motorcycle, who demanded the Gy$2 million in cash he was carrying at the time. In a bid to escape, Ramjewan sped away, but lost control of his vehicle and ended up in a trench in the vicinity of the Industry Public Road.

The gunmen then pounced on the hapless man, hitting him repeatedly on the head with their helmets before shooting him in the chest and escaping with the money. The businessman, of Ramjewan’s Auto and General Store of Lot 5 Crown Dam, Industry, East Coast Demerara, was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Meanwhile, Guyana Times International understands that Skeete has a pending matter at the Sparendaam Police Station with regards to another robbery under arms. He is accused of robbing Ronald Jhaman, a businessman of Vryheid’s Lust, ECD on March 3, 2011, and was granted bail when he made an appearance before Magistrate Latchman.

The quantity of the bail was not confirmed.

Additionally, Skeete made an appearance before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts on July 10, 2008 to answer a charge of robbery under arms.

It was alleged that on July 1, 2008, while armed with a gun, he robbed George Ramsarran of one wrist watch, one gold band, Gy$94,000 and US$150. Police sources confirmed that Skeete and another man allegedly walked into Ramsarran’s business place, located on John Street, Werk-en-Rust, and relieved him of the articles. Skeete was again granted bail.

A police source related that Skeete is a well- known character to the police in C and A Divisions.
