A goal from Khano Smith in the dying minutes of the game gave Bermuda some consolation in the game, but Guyana’s ‘Golden Jaguars’ emerged with a 2-1 victory last evening to stay unbeaten in Group Two of the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers at the National Stadium, Providence.
Watched on by a vociferous partisan home crowd, the ‘Jaguars’ squandered several goal scoring opportunities in the opening half, which ended nil-all. Both teams were aggressive in the opening segment, with Guyana controlling most of the possession.
Upon resumption, the hosts started positively, and the desired result came when Vurlon Mills received the ball from a corner shot by skipper Christopher Nurse and duly tapped in, beating the defence of goalie Frederick Hall in the 50th minute.
Suddenly, the energy started to flow, and the ‘Jaguars’ were springing around full of confidence.
It wasn’t long after that the score would be doubled, as Mills, who also scored against India in the friendly international a fortnight ago, fought through a bunch of players and scored in the 59th minute.
Both teams continued to attack at goal, with the Bermudans missing a few close opportunities. Goalie Ronson Williams had his work cut out, but used his height to good effect, much to the delight of the spectators.
However, he failed to stop a blistering left- footer from Smith in the 90th minute, conceding his first goal in three games this season.
After the game, Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz said it was a hard fought win. “The guys played with a lot of heart and determination, but not the type of finesse that I would have liked.” Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago defeated Barbados 2-0 last evening to stay unbeaten in the Group. The ‘Golden Jaguars’ and Trinidad and Tobago are joint leaders of the group with two wins from as many games, while Bermuda and Barbados are yet to record a win.
