‘A strong legacy’

Luis Alberto Moreno, President of the IDB acknowledges Jagdeo’s vision, leadership

As the service of President Bharrat Jagdeo comes to a close in his capacity as president of the Republic of Guyana, we take advantage of this opportunity to acknowledge his vision and leadership, which has transformed the economic and social landscape of Guyana and wider Latin America and Caribbean region.

The IDB is pleased to have been your partner in supporting an ambitious development agenda.

This partnership brought about significant achievements which changed the lives of the people of Guyana. Some of the highlights include the success in improving childhood nutrition and primary education, which enhanced the quality of life of children; the reforms in governance, with special emphasis on public financial management to enable independent oversight of government functions and, very importantly, facilitating the HIPC initiative, bringing about significant debt relief and setting the stage for renewed macroeconomic stability and growth. The space created for development expenditure has been well utilized and Guyana now finds itself well poised for the future.

Accompanying this modernization process were the initiatives to improve the business climate and support private sector growth and competiveness thereby reducing the challenges faced by many productive sectors.

Moreover, we thank you for being a strong supporter of the Bank and the different transformation efforts we have undertaken to improve the impact that they have in the region. Your support has been indispensable in shaping our discussions.

Specifically, we praise you for your valuable leadership in global topics like renewable energy, environmental preservation and integration. Particularly noteworthy is your vision to forge a Low Carbon Development Strategy that has not only attracted international attention but has mobilized new and innovative financial flows linked to forest preservation and environmental responsibility. We are sure you will continue to be a powerful promoter of the need to conserve and more intelligently manage the planet’s natural assets.

Your vision and determination were greatly appreciated and evermore invaluable. You leave a strong legacy. We wish you well; success and fulfilment in future endeavours.”
