Kwesi “Lightning Hitman” Jones and Howard “Battersea Bomber” Eastman will clash for the vacant Light Heavyweight title of Guyana when action on the monthly ProAm boxing card continues on March 25 at Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The 26-year-old Jones was initially slated to challenge Barbados-Based Guyanese Cleveland Fraser for the same title. But this publication understands that Fraser could not honour his commitment to the bout.
According to a reliable source, Eastman readily accepted the offer to fight Jones, but up to press time yesterday, it was unclear if the Berbice-based pugilist had signed his contract.
The last time these two boxers met was on the September 2010 edition of the ProAm card when Jones emerged with his sixth victory in seven fights. Incidentally, that encounter was the last for both boxers.
Jones’s only defeat has come against Edmond DeClou, while the 40-year-old Eastman is vastly experienced with 46 wins (36 KOs) and six defeats from 52 fights.
Speaking to this publication via telephone yesterday, Jones said he’s “fully fit and prepared” for the 12-round encounter, although he has never fought beyond four rounds.
“I’m ready for this fight. I’m confident of victory,” Jones reckoned. “I’m not making any predictions, but if the knockout comes, I will take it. I’m taking skills and power to the ring.”

Jones is currently in training at the Andrew “Six Heads” Lewis gym in Albouystown under the watchful eyes of Coach George Oprecht. He is sparring with fellow gym-mates Kurt Bess, Eversley Browne, Mark Austin, and Winston Pompey. Efforts to contact Eastman for a comment yesterday proved futile.
Apart from the Jones/ Eastman bout, three other professional fights are carded for the evening, while four amateur contests will also complement the evening’s proceedings. The amateur line-up, however, is yet to be decided.
On the professional segment, Edmond De Clou will take on Eversley Browne in a super bantamweight contest; Simeon “Candyman” Hardy will challenge Cassius Matthews at welterweight; while in the lone female fight, Sharon Warde will match gloves with Veronica Blackman for the fourth time. All three of these fights will go for four rounds.
The once-monthly Friday Night Fights ProAm Boxing card is a collaborative effort of the Guyana Boxing Board of the Control (GBBC), Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA), the Sport Ministry, and NCN, and is aimed at enhancing the profiles of the professionals and showcasing amateur talent.
