A goal in the last minute of the match by Justine Rodrigues left some Dominican Republic players in tears, and sealed the game for ‘Lady Jags,’ taking them to the top of Group ‘D’ in the CFU Women’s Under-20 World Cup Qualifiers ON Sunday at the Uivlugt Community Centre Ground. The teams battled each other throughout the first half without a goal being scored. The first goal was scored in the 51st minute by Lady Jags’ Elysia Prasad. And just when the fans were screaming, “Them Dominican wouldn’t score today….. the jaguars would chew them up,” Yqaueisi Soriano levelled the score 1-1 when she found the back of the net in the 62nd minute, her tenth goal of the Qualifiers so far.

The two teams attacked each other’s goals and defended until the last minute of the game. It appeared that the match would end in a tie but a breath-taking goal off a free kick saw the ‘Lady Jags’ home. The initial shot to goal was blocked by the Dominican Republic’s keeper, who fell in the process.

As the ball eluded the grasp of the goalie Rodrigues pounced, and it was 2-1.

According to Rodrigues, she knew that they had a good chance of scoring since they were all in front of Dominican Republic’s goal.

She said kicking the ball into the net after the goalkeeper fell was done on instinct as it happened in about two seconds.

Lady Jags’ captain, Ashley Savona, said the girls were determined to fight to the end. Savona said that the victory was satisfying because before the game started they sat and listened to the Dominican Republic players banging the walls and claiming victory. The captain said she relishes the opportunity to represent Guyana and lead a group of professional and talented footballers.

The match was an evenly contested one and drew a sizeable and noisy crowd, who, not surprisingly, rooted for the ‘Lady Jags’. Both Lady Jags and the Dominican Republic would move on to the next round as they are the two top teams in Group ‘D’ on 9 and 6 points respectively. Guyana scored a total of 14 goals and conceded one in the tournament, while the Dominican Republic scored 15 goals and conceded two.
