‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry floors Lett in ‘one-sided affair’

USA-based Guyanese Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry aptly exemplified his alias by dishing out a sound beating on Barbados’ Selwyn Lett to successfully defend his World Boxing Council’s (WBC) Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) Bantamweight title at the WBC CABOFE Caribbean Cup Eliminators last Saturday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown.

The classy young fighter wasted little time in disposing of his opponent, who was literally converted into a human punching bag during the one minute, 58 seconds the bout lasted.

Dharry used the opening seconds to get his rhythm right, dancing around the ring, before he set about destroying the Bajan in the one-sided affair.

The diminutive ‘Coolie Bully’, who was under the expert guidance of legendary Guyanese Lennox Blackmore for the fight, backed Lett into the ropes and went on a rampage, battering the little man from the Land of the Flying Fish.

With the crowd roaring him on, Dharry did not give his opponent a chance to throw a punch or even run from him as he connected with expert precision.

Punches flew from all corners, and it took the intervention of the referee Franklin Brisport to prevent Lett from a possible visit to the hospital.

As Lett shook his head in disbelief walking back to his corner, Dharry lifted the Bantamweight belt towards the Eastern end of the Sports Hall where a vociferous group of his relatives had gathered to offer support.

“I wanted to go a few rounds and get some time in the ring, but after I hit him first and I hurt him, I was like ‘I need to finish this’,” Dharry said after the contest.

The champion added that he was expecting a tough fight after all the pre-fights ramblings by Lett.

“Yes, I was expecting a stiffer fight. After yesterday (Friday) he said he is gonna give us a surprise and he’s ready to fight 12 rounds and give me a surprise and take my belt back to Barbados… but I refuse to lose that belt you know. I train hard to get it and I will train hard to keep it.”

Dharry said he’s happy to have Blackmore in his corner, and will seek to get the services of the former national boxer for the remainder of the WBC CABOFE Cup of Champions. “I asked him a few weeks ago if he would be willing to work with me for this fight and he said yes… I was excited because I know he’s perhaps the greatest Guyanese fighter.”
